Assignement 2: Self-Portrait

Robert Mapplethorpe born in 1946 and died at the age of 42 in 1989. This photographer specializes in self-portrait/portrait pictures. He is known to create controversial art for his era. Some pictures that I will present can be left at the discretion of the reader.

Robert Mapplethorpe takes black and white portrait and self-portrait. The pictures are mostly following the same patterns, the part that needs to be put in front is most of the time centred and the rest becomes just blend in with the character. Most of his pictures have a simple background as a black or white wall. The photographer more focuses on what needs to be seen briefly then the whole picture. Looking at his pictures, I was really focused on the subject by looking at facial expression, body language, details on him than trying to figure out the background. Some of his last pictures reflected his own illness and mortality by taking those pictures he looked and welcomed death without fear. You could say it was therapeutic. By researching him, I understood that you could play multiples persona, but they all related to you.
